Under the UAE preparations for ratifying the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 as amended, in order to protect the seafarer's rights and based on Resolution No. 1 for the year 2018 regarding the compulsory financial protection for the seafarers:
All UAE Flag ships trading in International voyages, and all foreign Flag ships operating in UAE water of 200 GT and more, shall have a financial security system (contact of insurance) in place so as to ensure that compensation to seafarers and their families in the event of abandonment, death or long-term disability of seafarers due to an occupational injury, illness or hazard, and up to four months' owed contractual wages and entitlements. The contract of insurance should be matching the requirements of 2014 amendment to the MLC, regulation (2.5) and regulation (4.2).
